Colin Montgomerie defeated an elite field in the desert which included nine members of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team. Trailing Miguel Angel Jimenez by one going into the final round, the Scot, having lost almost three stones in weight over the winter, moved alongside the Spaniard with a birdie at the first. Jimenez regained the lead, despite a further birdie from the Scot at the third, and led by one playing the short seventh where Montgomerie holed from ten feet and Jimenez three putted resulting in a two shot swing. "After that it was really matchplay," said Montgomerie. Jimenez, however, was on level terms again with three to play but he bogeyed the 16th and Montgomerie secured his victory with a 215-yard driver off the fairway over water at the 18th for a two-putt birdie four.
