Rose takes top billing at Kingsbarns

Justin Rose carded an incredible 28 on the front nine at Kingsbarns to upstage superstar team-mate Justin Timberlake and put himself right in contention heading into the weekend at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

For once Rose has not been the star attraction in his group this week, with the World Number Four playing alongside the popstar and actor in the team event.

But he was very much the focus of attention early on day two as, after an opening par, he birdied the second, eagled the par five third and then made a hat-trick of gains to surge up the leaderboard.

Further birdies on the eighth and ninth then saw him match Benjamin Hebert's eight under par record for the lowest nine of the season.

A double bogey on the 11th ended his hopes of a 59 but Rose came home in 36 for a 64 and was just two shots off the lead.

When I did make a mistake today, my partner really stepped up and made two good pars each time I dropped a shot

"It was an unbelievable front nine," he said. "You never know when it's going to happen like that.

"I was super relaxed. Nice little start - a good birdie at the second and eagled the next, had a couple of really good numbers with wedges and went stiff-stiff.

"I was five under through five without much effort and the sixth hole is a short hole, six through six.

"I took my chances where I should have and any time you make an eagle it bumps a cherry on top.

"I felt like every time I made a mistake today, I bounced back pretty quickly. I realised I was in a good position in the tournament and when I did make a mistake today, my partner really stepped up and made two good pars each time I dropped a shot."

There was no better illustration of that than the 11th, where Rose was left facing a long putt for bogey after playing a poor chip from the side of the green.

Timberlake was even further away but drained a monster putt to earn the pair a par in the team event where they are battling to make the cut.

"I just closed my eyes and prayed," said Timberlake of his stunning putt.
