Justin Rose turned in a remarkable 28 to surge into a share of the lead on day two of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The World Number Four had started the day five shots off the lead but he made an eagle and six birdies on the front nine at Kingsbarns to leap to 12 under.
The effort was just one shot shy of the lowest nine holes in European Tour history and matched the eight under 28 carded by Benjamin Hebert earlier this season at the Volvo China Open.
Rose's fellow Englishmen Matthew Jordan and Jordan Smith were also at 12 under alongside local favourite Calum Hill.
Rose's playing partner Justin Timberlake has been grabbing many of the headlines this week but the focus was firmly on the 2013 U.S. Open Championship winner as he threatened to send records tumbling.
After an opening par, he birdied the second, eagled the par five third and then made a hat-trick of gains to surge up the leaderboard.
Further birdies on the eighth and ninth then saw him match the lowest nine of the season.
Jordan was on a brilliant run of his own at St Andrews as he made an eagle on the third and followed it with four birdies to sit six under through seven holes.
Hill was also six under for his round after birdies on the first, third, sixth, ninth, 11th and 12th in his first 12 holes on the Old Course.
Smith had completed 12 holes at Carnoustie and he was four under for his round after five birdies and a bogey.
New Zealander Ryan Fox, Frenchman Victor Perez, Scot Richie Ramsay and England's Matthew Southgate were at 11 under, with 15 players within three of the lead.
