Rory McIlroy keen to go low at Kingsbarns on Friday

Rory McIlroy has set his sights on going low at Kingsbarns Golf Links on Friday after kicking off his Alfred Dunhill Links Championship campaign with a 69 at Carnoustie.

With ideal conditions greeting the star-studded field of professional golfers and world-famous celebrities on the Scottish coast on day one, McIlroy admitted he perhaps did not make the most of the weather at a notoriously tricky course.

But he is determined to make up for that when he heads to Kingsbarns on day two.

He said: "It's nice to get Carnoustie out of the way.

"It's a course where we had perfect conditions for it. So I feel like I could have taken advantage of it a bit more.

"But yeah, Kingsbarns, a course where if you do get decent conditions, obviously historically, there's been a lot of low scoring.

"So you know, try to get out there tomorrow and shoot a low one and get myself into the tournament."

McIlroy is playing alongside his father Gerry McIlroy this week, and revealed Saturday will be a special day for the pair.

He added: "Lovely to be out here with him (Gerry). We've done this a few times before.

"It's his 65th birthday on Saturday so to be able to stroll around the Old Course with him on his 65th is going to be a pretty cool occasion.

"Delighted to be out here with him, and hopefully we can make a few more birdies tomorrow."
