A ten under par 62 saw 21 year old Dane Thorbjorn Olesen set the clubhouse target during a compelling final round of the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi.
The Challenge Tour graduate birdied the first two, then saw his approach to the third bounce once into the cup for eagle.
Three further birdies followed as he turned in 29, and although he bogeyed the 11th, he responded with a hattrick of gains before another birdie at the last saw him set the benchmark at 20 under par.
“It was amazing to start with two birdies and then holed my second shot for an eagle at the third,” he said.
“I think it’s the first time I’ve holed a full shot in a tournament so it felt magic. 23 putts today – I spoke to Thomas Björn after my third round and he gave me a little lesson, so thanks Thomas!
“My golf has been good last week and this week. I found something in my swing. There are birdie chances out there but hopefully I can scare them a little bit with my 20 under total.”
There were birdies galore at Royal Pak I Roveri, and on the course overnight leader Robert Rock was first to catch Olesen.
The 34 year old, seeking his maiden European Tour title, seemed understandably nervous at the start of his round after seeing his two shot advantage wiped out before hitting a ball.
He bogeyed the third, but then reeled off four successive birdies from the fifth, with another gain at the tenth taking him to 20 under with eight to play.
Scotland’s Pete Whiteford and England’s Gary Boyd were two back with four and six to play respectively, while in his home city of Turin and cheered by large galleries of fans, Francesco Molinari was part of the group on 17 under.
