Reed secures Ryder Cup spot

Patrick Reed sealed his place on the US Ryder Cup team in style with victory at the Barclays.

The 26-year-old Texan shot a closing one under par 70 to finish a shot ahead of fellow American Sean O'Hair and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo at Bethpage Black.

Reed started the week eighth in the US qualifying standings for Hazeltine, but with Davis Love III afforded four captain's picks the European Tour member was vulnerable to a late charge from the likes of Rickie Fowler, who began the final round with a one shot lead.

However, after a flawless front nine Fowler dropped four shots in six holes from the 11th to tumble down the leaderboard and will now need one of Love's wild cards.

Reed, who had drawn level at the top of the leaderboard with three birdies in four holes from the fourth, added a further gain with an eight footer on the 12th and held firm with a nine under par total despite bogeys on the 16th and 18th.

"It feels amazing - I haven't had that feeling in a while coming down the last couple," said Reed.

Asked about earning a second Ryder Cup cap after claiming three-and-a-half points for the US team beaten at Gleneagles two years ago, he added: "I'm so glad - it was a huge goal to get back because my first Ryder Cup I played so well."
