Race to Dubai leader Patrick Reed insists he still has work to do if he wants to get his hands on the Harry Vardon Trophy at the end of the European Tour season, but he was pleased to extend his advantage with a strong finish at the 2020 BMW PGA Championship.
American Ryder Cup star Reed came into Sunday's final round at Wentworth Golf Club trailing overnight leader Tyrrell Hatton by four shots but fell out of contention after managing just two birdies and a bogey on the front nine.
Birdies at the 12th and 14th gave Reed renewed hope but a bogey on the 15th stalled his momentum.
Reed finished his round with a flourish, though, converting an eagle chance from eight feet at the 18th to finish the week on 14 under par - five shots behind eventual champion Hatton - and grab a share of third place alongside England's Andy Sullivan.
That gave 2018 Masters Tournament winner Reed 394.0 Race to Dubai points, taking his total to 2,242.70, and he is hopeful he will still be the man to catch at the season ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai in December.
Reed said: "I think that was the biggest thing - coming over and testing out my golf game, but also at the same time, trying to hold that top spot.
"Because the biggest thing was to come over and show support, play some good golf and hopefully by the time we get to Dubai we're in the driver's seat and everyone is having to chase me.
"There's a lot of the season left. You still have some European Tour events, but then you also have Augusta and I'm sure there's a lot of points there, as well.
"That being said, it's far from over. You have to continue playing solid golf and continue playing well and you need to play well at the big events, too."
