There was a birdie frenzy on the final day of the Porsche European Open which saw two players break the course record at Green Eagle Golf Courses on Sunday.
After tricky conditions on the first three days, the sun was shining on the Hamburg golf course as the fans were treated to a spectacle throughout the final round.
However, it was the pairing of Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger and Frenchman Romain Wattel who caught the eye with terrific eight under par 64s.
Wiesberger, who sits second on the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex following two wins this season, produced a stellar Sunday performance which lifted him in contention to pick up another European Tour title.
It could be forgiven to write off the 33-year-old after he bogeyed the second hole to drop to three under par, six shots behind overnight leaders Robert MacIntyre and Bernd Ritthammer.
But the Austrian only looked up as he made a charge towards the top of the leaderboard.
A birdie at the fourth brought him back to level par for the round but he rolled in four in a row from the eighth to move to eight under and become a serious contender for the title.
The birdie trail continued with a hat-trick from the 13th - which included brushing the cup with an eagle putt at the 15th - before finishing his tournament by picking up a shot at the last to set the clubhouse target of 12 under - eventually settling for fifth place and a cheque for 84,800 euros.
“I’ve been striking the ball really really good, probably the best I have all year,” Wiesberger said. “It was frustrating for me on the greens, my short game wasn’t really good.
“That’s why I wasn’t further up the leaderboard going into Sunday. I holed a really nice long putt on eight to get myself going and that kick-started it.
“I hit a lot of really nice shots and a couple of nice putts as well and let it go to see what I could achieve out there today.
“We wanted 13 (under) really. It was a high level today for a 64. I have to be pretty pleased, but we were thinking that 13 would be nice.”
Wattel squeezed past the cut to make the weekend at two over par - just his fifth in 20 events on the European Tour this season.
He made his move on Saturday with a five under par 67 and followed that up with a blemish free 64 on Sunday, rolling in six birdies before finishing with a superb eagle at the last to earn sixth place.
“It’s a great feeling. I’m really happy with the way I played. To finish with a 64 is really nice, it’s unbelievable. I’m happy to go home now,” Wattel said.
“Yeah, 13 under every weekend would be nice. I played great at the weekend, so I’m going to try and keep going, do the same next week and we’ll see.
“I keep working and on days like this everything goes well. I’m not focusing on when it’s going to happen, just trying to improve my game and get better every day.
“It was really easy for Bernd. He was on the flag every time and I was trying to do the same. It was nice to be paired with him and both of us to shoot really good scores.”
