The Real Club Sevilla Golf will be the venue for the 25th anniversary of the Challenge de España, a tournament that has been one of the most important events in the Challenge Tour season and a proven pathway to the DP World Tour. Players will once again have the opportunity to tee it up in the Challenge de España, promoted by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, when the tournament heads to Seville from the May 9-12, 2024.
The Challenge de España was played for the first time in 1999 in El Saler, Valencia, and since then it has travelled to some of the best golf courses in our country in the provinces of Valencia, Badajoz, Alicante, Alava, Madrid, Gerona, La Gomera, Cádiz, Almería and, for the first time, it will visit Seville for one of the most important events in its history.
A story that began in 1999 with the aim of promoting the next generation of golfing talent has since become a regular in the Challenge Tour season. Over the years the Challenge de España has grown in terms of quality and prestige, attracting players who are currently among the great stars of world golf.
For Jaime Salaverri, Vice President of the RFEG and President of the Professionals Committee, "it is a very special edition in which, taking stock of the great moments we have experienced in the past 24 editions, we can feel very proud not only of the winners who have emerged as a result of their victory in the Challenge de España, but also of the opportunities we have been able to offer our professionals to reach the major circuits, as they have done. We are very pleased with the work we have done and look forward to continuing our commitment to the Challenge Tour.
Jamie Hodges, Challenge Tour Director, said: “I am delighted with the impact that the Challenge de España has had on the Challenge Tour over the years and we have seen great players emerge as a result of this tournament. It is one of the most important events on the calendar, and this year we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Challenge de España, so it will undoubtedly be a very special event".
The event will be held at one of the best courses in Spain, the RCG of Seville, which has hosted some of the most important tournaments in our country. Rafael Dominguez, its President, celebrates, "we have witnessed great events and now we are delighted to once again position ourselves in world golf with this double celebration, the 25th anniversary of the Challenge de España and the 35th anniversary of the Challenge Tour. Great players have come from here, from Real, and we hope that this trend continues and that we can enjoy quality golf, with a winner who will reach the top of world golf".
Javier Gervás, promoter of the Challenge de España, assures that "the growth in terms of impact and importance has been exponential; the path it has taken over all these years has left an indelible mark on Spanish golf and has undoubtedly helped a lot to position golf at a national level. It is a fundamental event in the calendar for golfers of the present, the future and the past of Spanish golf.”
