Scotland’s Richie Ramsay insists there is no extra pressure on him at this week’s Trophée Hassan II as he makes a last-ditch bid for a place in next month’s Masters Tournament.
The top 50 players in The Official World Golf Ranking on Monday will earn invites to Augusta National, and World Number 73 Ramsay almost certainly requires victory with his final roll of the dice in Agadir.
However, the two-time European Tour winner believes that staying relaxed is more likely to result in winning; and even if he doesn’t make the year’s first Major there is plenty to enjoy on the Golf du Palais Royal course.
“I’ve been here twice before, it’s kind of unknown but it is one of the best courses we play on tour the whole year,” said Ramsay.
“It’s in immaculate condition because it hardly ever gets played. It’s beautiful in here; you’re inside the fortress and its absolutely fantastic inside.
“All in all it’s a really good week and guys enjoy coming here especially this time of year when the weather back home is cold.”
Ramsay’s only previous Masters Tournament appearance came in 2007 as US Amateur Champion, but the 29 year old is eager to return to Georgia.
“It’s a very slim chance but I’m just going to try and go out there and play, take it one shot at a time,” he added.
“You can put a lot of pressure on yourself. This is the type of golf course that suits my game - I feel comfortable around it. I’ve just got to go out and try and enjoy the golf course.
“The drive up Magnolia Lane (at Augusta) is fantastic. Every hole on the back nine you think of all the shots that guys have hit into the green. If you ever get the chance to go you have to grab it with both hands because it’s iconic.”
Another player making an 11th-hour bid for ticket to Augusta National is Austria’s World Number 79 Bernd Wiesberger.
“I’ve seen a clip on youtube of guys skipping it up to the 16th green and I’ve seen Martin Kaymer holing out and that’s something I’m looking forward to doing if I can go and play practice rounds,” he said.
