Race to Dubai top three enjoyed Italian Open tussle

Jon Rahm was focused on his performance rather than the Race to Dubai rankings as he played alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Sergio Garcia at the Italian Open.

Englishman Fleetwood leads the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex ahead of Masters Tournament winner Garcia and World Number Five Rahm.

And the huge crowds who followed the star-studded group at Golf Club Milano on Friday morning were rewarded as all three players produced some stunning golf.

Garcia followed up Thursday's 66 with a bogey-free 67 to get to nine under par - four shots behind co-leaders Marcus Fraser and Matt Wallace.

Rahm is two strokes further back after Friday's 68, with Fleetwood on five under courtesy of a flawless second-round 66 which included five birdies.

We're all great friends. It's all in good fun. We are trying to play the best we can - Jon Rahm

But instead of thinking about catching his playing partners in the rankings, Rahm was enjoying spending time in their company.

He said: "We're all great friends. It's all in good fun. We are trying to play the best we can.

"I wasn't thinking about Tommy being number one on the Money List or Race to Dubai really. It's not what we have in mind.

"We're trying to hit the best shot we can at that moment.

"We had two great days. It's too bad we have to split up and play with different people. It's been really fun."

Fleetwood, who won the season's second Rolex Series event in France earlier in the year, knows anything can happen in the closing stages of the season.

He said: "It's been great. It must be great for the viewers to watch one, two and three in the Race to Dubai.

"Today was important to make sure I was around at the weekend with a chance to move up.

"With the tournaments that are coming up, they are all massive events, so anything can happen, really.

"You've just got to keep going and keep your head down. They're massive tournaments, which is great."

Garcia, who is playing at his first Rolex Series event this week, was impressed by the local crowds in Monza.

He said: "It's great to see such big support from all the Italians.

"It was a fun couple of days with 1, 2 and 3 in the Race to Dubai. I think that not only we enjoyed it, but the people at home and the Italian people here probably had a good time."
