Alvaro Quiros’ dramatic putt for eagle on the final hole, which sealed his win at the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World, took on further significance as it gave the Tour Players Foundation - Birdie Pledge a final fundraising boost.
There was a flurry of late drama at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, in Dubai, and the Spaniard’s dramatic 30 foot putt, as well as Paul Lawrie’s birdie on the 18th and Luke Donald’s consecutive birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th, all made a huge difference to the Birdie Pledge by ensuring that the money raised broke the 80,000 dirhams mark.
The Tour players Foundation (TPF), the charitable arm of The European Tour, led the charitable initiative which meant that for every birdie, 100 dirhams (in UAE currency) was donated to the Foundation’s chosen charity in Dubai, the Special Needs Families Group (SNF Group), while an eagle resulted in a donation of 200 dirhams.
With the field in Dubai accumulating 808 birdies and 12 eagles, a total of 83,200 dirhams (€16,912) was raised for the local charity by the outstanding performances of the players at the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World.
Shortly after the conclusion of the Championship, the TPF topped that figure up to 90,000 AED which equates to a final donation of over €18,000.
The TPF has supported the SNF Group since 2009, enabling it to develop and expand its care of the special needs children of Dubai. The support of organisation such as the SNFG is a key objective of the TPF in its desire to give back in regions that host European Tour events.
The SNF Group specialises in providing holistic support to young adults with special needs through personalised and professional care at the SNF Development Centre, situated in the Al Kamara area of Dubai.
