Switzerland’s Paolo Quirici shot a seven under par 65 to take a two-shot lead into the second round of the Turespana Masters - Open Andalucia at Parador Malaga Del Golf in Southern Spain.
His round of nine birdies, including three in the last four holes, and two bogeys moved him clear of a group of 12 players on 67 that includes Ryder Cup Captain Mark James.
31-year-old Quirici, who enjoyed his best season on the European Tour last year after finishing joint fourth in the One 2 One British Masters, credited his new coach, Andrea Ferrario, with his good form. "I’ve been working very hard since last season with my new coach and made many changes to my game," he said. "Over the last few weeks I’ve played some very good holes, but also some strange ones, but hopefully this round will give my confidence a boost."
