Justin Rose was showered with praise following his US Open victory at Merion, with British Prime Minister
David Cameron
among those to congratulate the Englishman.
Thousands of people took to social media to congratulate the father-of-two, who has become the first Englishman to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970 - ten years before Rose was born.
Mr Cameron tweeted: "Congratulations to @JustinRose99 in winning the #usopen. The first English winner since Tony Jacklin in 1970."
Also leading the praise was the last English winner of a major,
Sir Nick Faldo
, who triumphed at the Masters Tournament in 1996.
Referring to the many competitions which have since passed without being claimed by an English golfer, he tweeted: "68 Majors and moons and moons since...since! #Englishgolfers. Congratulations @JustinRose99 US Open Champ "Good/great golfing today"!"
World Number Two
Rory McIlroy
, who won the US Open in 2011, tweeted: “So happy for @JustinRose99! Couldn't happen to a better lad!”

South African Player, the 1965 US Open Champion, added: “Congratulations @JustinRose99 on a fantastic, emotional & deserving victory in @usopengolf at Merion. I am so happy for you & your family.”
Luke Donald
, Rose’s playing partner in the final round at Merion, also offered his own warm congratulations immediately after watching his friend and Ryder Cup Teammate lift the trophy.
“Justin for the last few years has been known as one of the best ball strikers in the game,” said Donald. “He showed that today.
“To win a US Open, you have to have ultimate control of your golf ball. He did that. He hit some really clutch iron shots down the stretch.
“I'm sure it's going to be emotional for him. He obviously lost his father a few years ago, and I'm sure that little sign up to the sky was for his dad.
“I'm very happy for him. Justin is a good friend of mine and it's good to see him come out on top.”
