Poulter full of confidence ahead of weekend

Ian Poulter is determined to prove that age is just a number as he heads into the weekend in a good position to claim a first Major Championship at the Masters Tournament.

The Englishman saw a statistic leading into this week suggesting that a 43-year-old player had only a three per cent chance of winning at Augusta National Golf Club but he was making a mockery of that after a second round 71.

He followed his opening 68 with three birdies and two bogeys and was full of his usual confidence at a layout where he has three previous top tens.

"I'm happy, I'm confident," he said. "I mean, I'm as confident as I'm ever going to be with someone who has got a three per cent chance.

"I haven't done a lot wrong. I had a three putt on 14 which was disappointing and apart from that I only really had a couple of mistakes this week.

"So I feel comfortable, I feel I'm hitting it well, I like the golf course, I know a lot about the course for certain pins.

"I'm just trying to be smart and not take myself out of the tournament, which I've done in the past."
