The Ryder Cup star began his second round with a one-stroke lead over the chasing pack after producing a flawless 62 at Firestone Country Club on day one.

And Englishman Poulter made two birdies in his opening eight holes early on Friday to jump to ten under par, two shots clear of fellow early starter Si Woo Kim in second.

Race to Dubai champion Tommy Fleetwood was among the star-studded group another stroke back on seven under after notching three birdies in his opening seven holes.

Spain's Jon Rahm, World Number Three Justin Thomas, Haotong Li and afternoon starter Kyle Stanley were also in a tie for third.

Masters Champion Patrick Reed made two gains early in his second round to join Patrick Cantlay on six under.

After safely parring his opening two holes, Poulter made his first birdie of the day at the third from just over four feet.

The 12-time European Tour winner then holed his birdie putt from 12 feet on the eighth to jump to ten under.
