Porsche European Open - Day one digest

Everything you need to know from Thursday's first round at Green Eagle Golf Courses.

Germany's home heroes impressed their adoring fans, while plenty of money was raised for charities on day one of the 2023 Porsche European Open.

Here is everything you need to know from Thursday's first round at Green Eagle Golf Courses.

Kieffer puts on a show

Maximilian Kieffer gave his home crowd plenty to cheer as he pulled off some remarkable shots on Thursday. The fireworks began at the third where he drained his 53-foot birdie putt, and he then holed from around 50 feet once again for an eagle on the fourth. He dropped a shot at the par-three fifth but bounced back with a chip-in birdie on the sixth, once again drawing a vocal response from the crowds. He finished the day in a share of the lead alongside Simon Forsström on four under par.

McEvoy's marvellous eagle

Richard McEvoy recorded his sole DP World Tour victory to date at this event in 2018, and he produced yet more magic at Green Eagle Golf Courses on Thursday as he celebrated his 400th start on the Tour. He holed out from the fairway for an eagle on the long 16th on his way to an opening 75. The Englishman, who joined the commentators in the box in the afternoon, said: "I'd previously gone bogey-bogey the two holes before, and then this happened! Nice little chip nine iron, nicely controlled and I managed to make a three." Check this out...

Home hope De Bruyn makes awesome ace

Germany's Jannik de Bruyn produced a moment that will live long in his memory in round one, as the 23-year-old made a hole-in-one at the par-three second from 190 yards using a seven iron. That took him back to level par, and he then made two birdies and no more bogeys over the remaining seven holes to sign for an opening 71.

Ferguson putts from the bunker

Finding himself in a greenside bunker at the eighth, Scotland's Ewen Ferguson decided to putt his way out of there. Not something you see every day...

'Birdies for Charity' raises almost €30,000 on day one

With title sponsor Porsche donating 75 euro for every birdie made during the four tournament rounds at this week's event as part of the “Birdies for Charity” fundraiser, €29,925 was raised on day one as 399 birdies flew in. The money will be split up equally between the “JOBLINGE Hamburg” and the “Hamburger Abendblatt hilft” initiatives.
