Player blog: Sergio Garcia

In this week’s Player Blog, Spain’s Sergio Garcia talks about the tough test awaiting the field at Oakmont, what he’s been up to since winning in his last appearance and his country’s chances in Euro 2016.

I’m very proud to be playing in my 17th consecutive US Open.

This is probably the toughest tournament we play all year, and I’m always happy when I do well. I’ve made the cut 14 times in 16 appearances, and you know if you make the cut you’ve played well. It’s nice to have that consistency over so many years, and hopefully I will do it again this week and hopefully I can contend. I’ve finished in the top ten four times, and I would love to be up there again.

It was nice to enjoy some family time before coming to Oakmont. My girlfriend, Angela, and I went back to Austin for a few days after the win in Dallas and rested a little bit. Then we flew to Milan to watch Real Madrid in the Champions League final. That was an awesome experience. We joined Luis Figo and his wife Helen and it was really exciting. I’ve been to a Champions League final before, but it was Angela’s first time, so it was great for her to experience it too. After that we went back to Spain where I practised a little bit and rested some more. Then we had my mum’s birthday, which we celebrated with her, and on top of that, we had my sister’s wedding. So it’s been a busy time, but it has been great spending time with everyone. We’ve had a lot of happy moments and we enjoyed it very much.

Watching Spain in Euro 2016 will help me relax this week.

I love watching football and there is nothing better than watching the Spanish national team. It is fun to watch the games. I’ve been catching the matches every day and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far. It will be difficult for Spain to win it for a third time in a row, but hopefully we have a chance. We have a good team, but there are a lot of good teams out there who can beat you, especially in a knock-out competition. You can have ten bad minutes and that costs you the whole thing, but hopefully we have a good chance again, and I will be watching and cheering for them.
