Play-off drama at the Belgian Knockout

Søren Kjeldsen was one of 14 players to emerge from two play-offs as the Belgian Knockout reduced its field from 144 to 64 on day two at Rinkven International Golf Club.

With the field split into two Sections and each Section needing to produce exactly 32 players to advance to the weekend, it was always likely some players would be left disappointed in Antwerp.

Last season, an 11 man play-off left three players out in the cold and this year there were five heading home after tackling an extra hole.

The Section B play-off was particularly harsh on England's Max Orrin, who produced a bogey free 66 to surge up the leaderboard, only to send his tee shot on the extra hole left and surrender a bogey.

Dane Lasse Jensen also made a bogey after finding a similar spot off the tee and it was Filippo Bergamaschi, Grant Forrest, Daan Huizing, Kristian Krogh Johannessen, Rikard Karlberg, Oscar Lengden, Pedro Oriol, Wade Ormsby and Matthias Schwab who emerged from an 11 player battle.

In Section A, eight needed to become five to make the weekend and once again it was errant tee shots that proved decisive.

Australian Adam Bland went a long way left and had to play out sideways, with Tom Lewis and James Morrison also finding the left hand side.

Lewis came up short with his second and could not get up and down and, while Morrison recovered to leave himself just five feet for par, he missed his putt and the trio were heading home after bogeys.

It opens everything up again. Now I have as good of a chance as anybody so it’s exciting - Søren Kjeldsen

Nino Bertasio, Sam Horsfield and Daniel Gavins all made their pars after finding the green in two, while Steven Brown and Kjeldsen held their nerve to get up and down from the side of the putting surface and make the knockout stages, where everyone will have a clean slate over six rounds of nine hole stroke play.

"You get a bit nervous playing the last few holes and being in a play-off on Friday, I have to admit it was quite interesting," said Kjeldsen.

"It opens everything up again. Anytime you make a cut you can always do something on the weekend but it is probably more true here because I would be ten back but now I have as good of a chance as anybody so it’s exciting.

"I played the event last year and I really loved it."
