Pieters ready for new challenge in Perth

Thomas Pieters is relishing the prospect of a new challenge when he tees it up for the first time at this week's ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth.

The big-hitting Belgian has played Lake Karrinyup Country Club before but never like this, with a regular cut taking place after 36 holes of stroke play and then another one after 54 holes to get the field down to 24.

There will then be a match play knockout contest - with the top eight receiving a bye into round two - as the players battle it out over six holes to find a winner.

Pieters is no stranger to match play having won four points on his Ryder Cup debut in 2016, and he is also a fan of innovation, hosting the Belgian Knockout which becomes a knockout stroke play event on the weekend.

The last time Pieters was in Australia he lifted the 2018 ISPS Handa Melbourne World Cup of Golf trophy alongside Thomas Detry, and he is delighted to be back Down Under.

"I love Australia," he said. "I've always had a liking for it and the golf courses especially.

"I just like new ideas and I think it makes it interesting for the public to watch on TV. I think that's where golf is going to go or needs to go, especially with young guys playing aggressive golf. It's fun to watch."

Pieters has combined his win in Melbourne with top 30s in six consecutive events as he looks for European Tour title number four, and despite feeling under the weather, he is happy with his game.

"Goals-wise, I would love to make it to Sunday and I think if you just make it to Sunday, anybody's got a chance," he said. "That's the goal.

"I'm playing decent golf, hitting the ball quite nice, I just haven't really put four really good rounds together. Like the last three tournaments I've played, I've played three really good rounds and one average, one bad one if you look at it.

"So it's just a matter of time, I think. I'm quite positive about the next few months."

He added: "I just got off the plane and I felt sick, I've been just really sick. I can't sleep, I took a lot of medication last night and I don't feel quite right. Hopefully a good night's sleep tonight and some rest this afternoon and I'll be better tomorrow.

"It's definitely happened before but it hasn't stopped me very often from playing good golf. Less expectations is sometimes good."
