Pieters makes fast start at Augusta

Thomas Pieters turned in 32 to open up a two-shot lead on day one of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National.

The Belgian was making his debut in the season's first Major Championship but - just as in his record-breaking four-point Ryder Cup bow - showed no signs of nerves making four birdies on the front nine.

That left him two ahead of three-time Green Jacket winner Phil Mickelson and his fellow American James Hahn.

There were then ten players at one under including Andy Sullivan, Martin Kaymer and clubhouse leader Russell Henley.

World Number One Dustin Johnson was forced to withdraw after sustaining a back injury in a fall on Wednesday.

Pieters put his bunker shot on the second to three feet to get up and down for birdie and his tee-shot on the par-three fourth to 13 feet to go two under.

He had 184 yards to the pin on the next but put his approach to five feet to take the lead and a pitch to even closer range on the eighth saw him move ahead once again.

He had been caught at three under by Mickelson who holed a 40-footer on the second for eagle and put his tee-shot on the fourth to 11 feet but then missed a very short par putt on the fifth.

Hahn was two off the lead alongside Mickelson after making a birdie-birdie start.

Sullivan birdied the second and while he dropped a shot on the sixth, a brilliant approach to the seventh saw him turn in 35.

Kaymer started with a bogey but found the cup with a brilliant long chip over a bunker to eagle the second and sit one under after six holes.

Australian Rod Pampling was also three off the lead alongside Americans Henley, Billy Hurley III, Kevin Chappell, JB Holmes, Rickie Fowler, Brandt Snedeker and Pat Perez.
