Papadatos is playing on an invite after narrowly missing out on gaining his card via the PGA Tour of Australasia and made four birdies in his first 12 holes to move to four under.

Home favourite Stone was also bogey-free after nine holes to sit a shot ahead of Spaniard Adri Arnaus, Scot David Drysdale, Swede Robert Karlsson, Welshman Stuart Manley and South African Erik van Rooyen.

Leopard Creek is much changed since Stone's victory two years ago but he still looked right at home, birdieing the tenth, 13th and 14th to jump out into the lead at three under.

England's Matthew Jordan made gains on the third, seventh and ninth to join him and there was a three-way tie as Papadatos picked up shots on the first, third and ninth.

The Australian hit the front on his own with a gain a the 11th, while Jordan bogeyed of the 12th and 13th to slip back.

Van Rooyen had a roller coaster start, bogeying the 12th but hitting back with an eagle on the par five next before birdieing the 15th. Another dropped shot came on the 17th but he picked it straight back up to turn in 35.

Manley - back on the European Tour after coming through the Challenge Tour last season - birdied the 11th and 12th in his first seven holes, while Drysdale made gains on the 13th and second in his first 11.

Karlsson made birdies on the 11th, 17th and 18th with a dropped shot on the 14th to turn in 35, while Challenge Tour graduate Arnaus also had three birdies and a bogey in his first eight holes.

Jordan was then in a group of eight players at one under including countryman Matt Wallace.
