Otaegui takes charge on day one of Lyoness Open

Adrian Otaegui is hoping to carry his form into the rest of the week after taking a two-shot lead on day one of the Lyoness Open powered by Sporthilfe Cashback Card.

The 23 year old, who earned his card for the season by firing 62 and 63 at Qualifying School in November, produced a blemish-free round of 64 at Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg.

Birdies at the third, seventh, eighth and ninth were followed by three successive birdies from the 14th and another on the 18th which came after a superb shot off the tee left the Spaniard with a tap in.

Björn Åkesson's strong closing nine put him two shots behind, with Gary Stal and Zander Lombard a stroke further back on five under.

But the chasing pack may struggle to catch Otaegui if he continues the form he showed on the opening day.

He said: "I'm hoping now I can play four days in the same way so that's the main goal.

Of course I'm very pleased. I played well from the beginning until the end and didn't make too many mistakes. - Adrian Otaegui

"The course is pretty hard and it's not easy to get the ball close to the pin so I'm pretty pleased with it."

Otaegui went out in the morning in cloudy conditions which proved to be the best of the day, with only one of the top six players having teed off in the afternoon.

That was Frenchman Grégory Bourdy, who was on course to join compatriot Stal and South African Lombard on five under until a bogey on the 17th.

Stal had led earlier, eagling the 15th - his sixth hole - as well as the fourth but a bogey on the seventh saw him post a 67.

Stal said: "I have found my game so I'm very happy. It's not every day you get two eagles in the same day – I holed out on the 15th after one bounce and on the second one I holed a ten foot putt."

Lombard had six birdies as he joined Stal on 67 but the pair were pipped by Åkesson.

The Swede, starting on the back nine, picked up four shots in his final nine holes to shoot a 66.

Defending champion Chris Wood was three under after 13 but dropped three shots either side of another birdie at seven for a one under 71.

It could have been worse as Wood found water on the ninth - his last hole - but produced a fine recovery shot to the edge of the green before two putting for a hard-earned bogey.

Home favourite Bernd Wiesberger is a shot better off after firing three birdies and a bogey on the tricky seventh.

The duo's playing partner Thomas Bjørn withdrew after 15 holes due to a back injury.
