Otaegui happy with second-place finish in Austria

Adrian Otaegui was delighted with his performance after firing a closing 69 at the Lyoness Open powered by Sporthilfe Cashback Card to secure his best ever finish on The European Tour.

The 23 year old, who led after the first round at Diamond Country Club thanks to a blemish-free 64 on Thursday, ended the weekend in second place on 12 under par, just one shot behind champion Ashun Wu.

Beginning his final round two shots off the lead, Otaegui moved to 11 under par courtesy of birdies at the third and sixth holes.

A phenomenal par save at the 13th kept him in contention, before successive birdies at the 15th and 16th handed Otaegui a share of the lead.

But after dropping his first shot of an otherwise flawless final round at the 17th, he came up just short.

The result is a huge boost for Otaegui, who earned his card for this season at Qualifying School in November, with his category having been re-ranked after the conclusion of the tournament. Otaegui remains in the second rank, behind Matthew Southgate, thanks to this week's finish.

The Spaniard was thrilled with his finish to the week. He said: "It was a great round.

"I was fighting for the whole 18 holes and that’s the most important thing for me - Adrian Otaegui

"I started with two birdies at the third and the sixth and I was saving a lot of good pars too, holing some good putts.

“I made two more birdies at 15 and 16 which I was very pleased with. I dropped a shot on the 17th which was a shame but I’m happy with how I fought. I have been playing well lately and I’m happy with a good result here."
