The Road to Mallorca stops off in Portugal this week for the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos, the 23rd event of the 2024 season. Here are three players to keep an eye on…
Form horse: Robin Williams
Robin Williams arrives in Portugal sitting seventh on the Road to Mallorca Rankings and is the highest ranked player yet to join the winner’s circle this season.
The South African – who has finished in the top ten on five occasions already this year – was unable to convert his one-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG last week into a maiden Challenge Tour title, but it will be no surprise to see him in contention once again this week.
Local boy: Tomas Gouveia
Tomas Gouveia is the leading Portuguese on the 2024 Road to Mallorca and currently sits in 72nd place on the Rankings, though a win on home soil would catapult him within touching distance of the top 20.
The 30-year-old is making his fifth appearance at the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos this week but has yet to make the cut, a streak he has every chance of breaking this week having cracked the top 40 in his last four starts on the Challenge Tour.
The outsider: Maximilian Steinlechner
Maximilian Steinlechner tees it up at Royal Óbidos playing some of his best golf. After recording a third-place finish on home soil at the Euram Bank Open earlier this season, the Austrian has played the weekend at each of his six starts since then.
The 24-year-old, who currently lies 60th on the Rankings, will be hoping to continue that form in Portugal this week as the 2024 Road to Mallorca enters its finishing stretch.
