On the tee: the Portugal Masters

The draw is out for tenth edition of the Portugal Masters and the fans in the Algarve will be treated to some attractive and interesting groups for the opening two days.

Alex Noren’s quest for a fourth victory in nine starts will get underway in the company of Ryder Cup playersThomas PietersandAndy Sullivan, who are his playing partners for the first two rounds of the Portugal Masters.

Defending champion Sullivan and Hazeltine hero Pieters will join the in-form Swede on the tenth tee at 8.40am on the opening morning of the tenth anniversary edition of the Portugal Masters. The trio have secured nine wins between them over the past 18 months, and are sure to attract a large following at Victoria Clube de Golfe, in Vilamoura.

With the Portugal Masters markingthe last chance for players to keep their cards for next season, the afternoon session features some fascinating three-balls asDaniel Im, Eddie Pepperell and Craig Lee– ranked 109th, 110th and 111th in the Race to Dubai – set off at 12.50pm from the first tee. The top 111 players keep their Tour cards for next season.

Similarly, two men hoping to overtake that trio and claim a coveted card for 2017 –Jason Scrivener(114th) andOli Fisher (115th) – have been grouped together alongsideChris Hansonat 1.20pm.

In the following group, two members of Darren Clarke’s backroom team at Hazeltine National,Thomas BjørnandPaul Lawrie, will get their challenge underway at 1.30pm from the first tee alongside Scott Jamieson, who cameagonisingly close to the first European Tour 59here in the third round here back in 2013.

Tom Lewis andSteve Websterwill be able to reminisce on their Portugal Masters victories from 1.20pm, when they will be joined on the tenth tee by another Englishman,Robert Rock, who is one of nine players who have competed in all nine previous editions of the tournament.
