On the Tee: Open Championship draw revealed

Phil Mickelson will launch the defence of his Open Championship title in the company of 2012 winner Ernie Els and current Masters champion Bubba Watson when play gets under way at Royal Liverpool on Thursday.

The Open flag flies above the course

The American, who claimed his first Claret Jug 12 months ago at Muirfield, gets started at 1405 local time alongside Royal Lytham & St Annes victor Els and this year's Augusta winner Watson.

England's Justin Rose, who on Monday moved to World Number Three following his magnificent triumph at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open last week, is out two groups later with World Number One Adam Scott and former US PGA Champion Jason Dufner.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, will not have to wait too long to make his competitive return to Hoylake in the 143rd Open Championship.

Woods, who claimed his third Claret Jug the last time the Open was staged at Hoylake in 2006, will start his first round at 0904 alongside Argentina's Angel Cabrera and European Tour Number One Henrik Stenson.

After missing the first two majors of the year following back surgery, Woods returned to action in the US PGA Tour's Quicken Loans National at the end of June, although he missed the halfway cut at Congressional.

Double Open champion Padraig Harrington is in the group after Woods along with 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel and Korea's KJ Choi, with former World Number One Rory McIlroy next out with American Jordan Spieth and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

US Open champion Martin Kaymer begins his bid for a second Major of the year at 1338 alongside Australian Jason Day and former Masters champion Zach Johnson.

England's David Howell has the honour of hitting the opening tee shot at 0625, with 2001 champion David Duval and former European Number One Robert Karlsson making up the first group.

The final group does not tee off until almost ten hours later, England's Christopher Rodgers, Scotland's Scott Jamieson, who grabbed one of the last spots with a top ten finish in Aberdeen last week, and Korea's An Byeong-hun getting their challenge under way at 1606.
