Olesen surges ahead

Having won his first European Tour title at the Sicilian Open in April, the 22 year old finished ninth in his second Major appearance at last week’s Open Championship – his sixth top-ten of the season.

That run continued on his return to Diamond Country Club. One behind Pablo Larrazábal overnight but with four holes remaining in his first round after a lengthy rain delay on the opening day, Olesen birdied the 17th to match the Spaniard’s 64.

After a quick turnaround Olesen then started his second round with birdies at the 12th and 13th to be two under through four and ten under for the week.

Larrazábal was not set to tee off again until the afternoon, and had also been passed by veteran Frenchman Thomas Levet.

The former Ryder Cup star birdied the 18th to complete a first round 65, then gained shots at the tenth and 14th to reach nine under for the week.

Australia’s David McKenzie holed his approach to the second for eagle to join Larrazábal on eight under, with Swede Mikael Lundberg and Dutchman Wil Besseling tied for fifth a shot further back.
