Scotsman Andrew Oldcorn described it as the best round of his career as an 11 under par 61 propelled him into contention in the final round of the WINSTONgolf Senior Open.
The 53 year old was in the first group out at WINSTONgolf in Germany - the final round was played as a U-draw – and racked up 11 birdies to producing the same score as his compatriot Craig Lee in the Omega European Masters yesterday.
At the time he finished, he was in a share of the lead at 11 under with his fellow Scot Gordon Brand Junior, who was three under through 12 holes.
“I don’t think it’s going to be enough to win, but right now I’m just proud of that achievement,” said Oldcorn, who equalled the lowest round in the history of the Senior Tour. “It’s the best round of my career, which spans nearly 30 years.
“I’ve known in the last few weeks that a good score was coming, because I’ve been playing so well and putting so poorly. I didn’t think it would be as low as that.
“I got a tip from my wife on the phone last night for my putting, funnily enough, and it worked – although I had two tap-in birdies on the front nine.
“I wanted to get to 12 under down the stretch, but I just couldn’t do it. I had a really difficult lie with my third shot on the par five 17th, and I honestly don’t know how that putt for birdie at the last missed. It just died off to the left an inch from the hole.
“These days don’t come along very often and I wanted to make the most of it.”
Oldcorn added: “Craig came into my head at one point, as I saw he was holing everything yesterday. I was doing the same today.”
Bob Cameron was level par for the day after 12 holes and ten under overall, while four players were another shot back at nine under as the final round headed towards a thrilling conclusion.
