Scotland’s Andrew Oldcorn has had to set a new target after claiming his maiden Senior Tour victory last week, and now has the Order of Merit title on his mind as he prepares for the Berenberg Bank Masters in Germany.
Having claimed the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship in his sixth Senior Tour appearance – becoming only the sixth player to complete the PGA double, having won the PGA Championship in 2001 – the 50 year old is second in the Order of Merit, behind American Tom Watson.
His incredible nine-shot victory at De Vere Slaley Hall was the fourth time in six events he has finished in the top five, and after a stunning start to his rookie season he is reassessing his goals.
“My first goal this year was to win, and now that I’ve done that I’ve got to set my sights a bit higher and think about winning the Order of Merit,” he said. “Tom’s unlikely to play in five events and I’ve stolen a bit of a march on Sandy [Lyle] here, so I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing and hopefully I’ll get my rewards.”
Oldcorn can make some ground on Watson this week as the Senior Tour heads to Germany for the first time in ten years for the Berenberg Bank Masters.
A stellar field will be contesting the €400,000 prize fund at Cologne Golf und Land Club, including Carl Mason, Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance, Sandy Lyle, 2010 Order of Merit winner Boonchu Ruangkit and Bernhard Langer, who is official Ambassador to the Berenberg Bank Masters in addition to his responsibilities as tournament organiser in tandem with his brother, Erwin, at Langer Sport Marketing.
