O'Sullivan leads Senior Open qualifiers

Six time European Senior Tour winner Denis O’Sullivan led the players who made it through final qualifying for The Senior Open Championship on Monday.

The Irishman shot a two under par round of 70 seal his place in the field at Walton Heath Golf Club from Thursday to Sunday alongside some of the game’s most iconic names, including defending champion Bernhard Langer and three-time winner Tom Watson.

O’Sullivan’s score was matched by Englishman Gary Owens and American Kirk Hanefield at Burhill, one of three qualifying venues used for The 2011 Senior Open Championship.

Other players to progress included Americans Dick Mast and Gary Trivisonno and English amateur Stephen East  (all level par 72).

At Kingswood, Italian Carlo Alberto-Acutis led the way with a two under par 70, finishing one stroke clear of Scotland’s Albert Mackenzie and Englishman Steve Cipa.

Finally, at Betchworth Park GC, eight players sealed their spot in the field, led by American Mike Donald, before play was suspended for a waterlogged course. The final two spots were determined on Tuesday morning, when Gordon Townhill and Seiki Okuda booked their places in the field.
