Nostalgic Kaymer ready for Wentworth test

Martin Kaymer will have extra reason for nostalgia this week as the man who completed the ‘Miracle of Medinah’ plays alongside his European Ryder Cup team-mates at the BMW PGA Championship.

With 11 out of the 12 European heroes at Wentworth Club this week, there will no doubt be talk aplenty of that famous final day in Chicago, when Kaymer kept his nerve to hole a six-footer and ensure his team's retention of the trophy in most extraordinary circumstances.

He said: “Hopefully we are going to play together, that would be really nice. But it's very nice that everybody came.

“We were talking about The Ryder Cup already in the weeks before, in the months before this event and I'm really happy that everybody showed up.”

Reflecting upon his moment of glory, the German added: “I think about it once in a while, when I have some very important putts on the golf course.

“But also with simple putts, too; if it's the first round and I am struggling to make birdies and then you want to get the momentum going, then you have one of those 10-12 footers, and then it pops up.

“You think, ‘Oh, I have made some very important putts in my career already, so now would be the time to make one.

“So just the belief that you experienced it, that I gained from The Ryder Cup, is very valuable.”

The 2010 US PGA Champion last triumphed at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa at the end of last year, but does not expect to have to wait too much longer to taste victory again.

“I feel very confident,” he said. “And it's just a matter of time that I will win. My last win was only five months ago, six months ago. But in the end of the day, it's all about winning.”

Such confidence will no doubt resonate with Kaymer's competitors, those same ones whom he celebrated so jubilantly alongside in September.
