The Qualifying School graduate, 173rd on The Race to Dubai and needing a big end to his season to retain laying privileges for next year, birdied three of his first five holes and gained another shot at the 16th in an outward 34 which contained two bogeys.
The 37 year old then picked up further strokes at the first and third to be four under with five to play.
That was one ahead of New Zealander Mark Brown, with nine players a shot further back on two under.
And amongst them was American two-time Major winner John Daly, now 652 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
The big-hitter, wearing clothes almost as colourful as his personality, raced out in a four under par 32 only to double bogey the first.
