Noren finishes strongly in Portugal

Alexander Noren had a hole in one en route to a ten under par 62 which propelled him up the leaderboard at the Portugal Masters.

Portugal Masters - Round Two

The 27 year old Swede, who won his first European Tour title at the Omega European Masters recently, leapt 41 places into a tie for fourth during the final round to set an early clubhouse benchmark of 17 under par at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course.

That was unlikely to be enough to win – overnight leader Retief Goosen was teeing off just as Noren finished on 20 under.

Noren birdied his first three holes and turned in 33 but it was on the back nine where he really hit top gear.

He birdied the 11th, 12th and 14th before acing the 207 yard 16th.

Remarkably he eagled the next as well, hitting a 246 yard four iron over the water to six feet on the long 17th.

Italy’s Francesco Molinari was 19 under, while Lee Westwood – who would go top of The Race to Dubai with a top-two finish – birdied the first to reach 18 under.

England’s Danny Willett and Robert-Jan Derksen of The Netherlands picked up shots early in their round to join Noren on 17 under with four and three holes played respectively.
