Noh roars out of the blocks

A host of European stars were well placed as Seung-Yul Noh claimed the first round lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston with a sizzling 62.

Twenty one year old Korean Noh, the winner of the Maybank Malaysian Open in 2010, mixed nine birdies with nine pars in a faultless performance.

He led by one from Chris Kirk, with Tiger Woods, Jeff Overton and Scott Moore a further shot back in third.

Then came World Number One Rory McIlroy, who responded to an opening bogey with seven birdies in a six under 65.

“I definitely didn’t drive the ball the way I wanted to,” McIlroy said after hitting only four fairways.

“I drove it great last week at Bethpage and didn’t putt so well but this week it seems like I didn’t drive it so good but putted well.”

English duo Luke Donald and Ian Poulter each got off to a good start with rounds of 67, while Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel went round in three under.

Woods said of his first round: “I hit the ball well enough to probably shoot maybe one or two more (under par). I missed a couple of little putts out there. It was just a nice, solid round.”
