The South African birdied the fourth and fifth at Royal Park I Roveri to advance to 19 under par in Turin.

That was two ahead of clubhouse leader Jaco Van Zyl, the South African’s brilliant closing 63 propelling him up the leaderboard.

England’s Gary Boyd was also 17 under with two to play after holing his six iron second to the par five eighth, alongside Pablo Larrazábal and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño - the Spanish pair having played six and five holes respectively.

Earlier Francesco Molinari carded a round of 65 for a ten under total to ensure he heads to Medinah in good form for The Ryder Cup, while European Captain José María Olazábal was another to card a seven under par round.

Defending champion Robert Rock went two better with a 63 on the day he was given honorary membership of the course, and climbed to ten under par as a result.

"It was a great way to finish,” said the Englishman. “I was hoping for that sort of score yesterday to get me back in the tournament, but it's always nice to shoot nine under at any time.

"I should've really birdied the last for ten under - that has a nice ring to it and I don't think I've shot 62 before. But I've made a decent move up the leaderboard and it's turned a poor week into an okay one.

"I played some really good golf today, so I'm very excited about things to come."
