Mulroy closes in on leaders in Johannesburg

A birdie blitz took Garth Mulroy to within a shot of the lead when the third and final round of the weather-affected Joburg Open got back under way on Sunday morning.

The South African had carded four birdies and a single bogey in the first six holes of his third round to get to seven under par on Saturday before play was suspended due to thunder, lightning and subsequent course flooding.

The tournament was reduced to 54 holes, with play set to resume at 07.00am on Sunday.

And after another delay on Sunday morning, Mulroy made gains at the eighth, tenth and 11th holes at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club to get to ten under - one stroke behind co-leaders Paul Waring and Darren Fichardt, who tee off at 11.15am.

Magnus A Carlsson, who was also seven under after six holes of his third round on Saturday, joined Mulroy on ten under thanks to birdies at the seventh, eighth and 13th.

China's Li Haotong, who had played 11 holes when play was halted on day three, closed his final round with back-to-back birdies to set the clubhouse target on nine under.

Englishman Max Orrin joined the large group on nine under after carding an eagle and a birdie in the first three holes of his final round.
