Moore makes flying start at Whistling Straits

Ryan Moore gave some hope to those looking to chase down leader Jason Day as he began his final round at the US PGA Championship with five consecutive birdies to reach the turn in 30.

It has been a week of low scoring so far at Whistling Straits with Hiroshi Iwata carding a Major Championship equalling low round of 63 on Friday and the low numbers continued to come in the third round after the course was softened by heavy rain.

Branden Grace went round in 64 in the third round to sit 12 under and he is three shots behind Day who recorded a 66 and one back of Jordan Spieth who came home in 30 to sign for a 65.

American Moore began his round two over par so will almost certainly not be bothering the engraver at the close of play but his sparkling start shows that once again birdies can be had on Sunday.

The 32 year old had gone 73-70-75 thus far but found his touch from short range on Sunday holing  from 12, ten and six feet before he rolled in a 22 footer to get to four under.

Another short one followed on the fifth and a nine footer on the ninth meant he had moved 34 places up the leaderboard into a share of 30th.

Moore then parred his next eight holes as the winds got up and conditions got trickier and he bogeyed the difficult last, which has been the hardest hole on the course all week at an average of 4.55, to record a 67 and take the very early clubhouse lead.

Victor Dubuisson, after his very impressive 67 on Saturday, picked up three shots from the fifth to move to three under for the day through seven with his tee shot on the seventh almost finding the cup.

That moved the Frenchman, who finished in a tie for seventh at Valhalla last year, six under for the tournament.

Day and Spieth go out at 1345 local time with both chasing a place in the history books.

Spieth could become only the third man in history after Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods to claim three Major Championships in the same year after his victories at the Masters Tournament and US Open Championship.

Day, meanwhile, is in the hunt for a first Major after finishing in the top ten in six of the last 11 and holding a share of the lead going into the final day of both the US Open and Open Championship this year.

"Everyone is trying to win," Day said following his third round. "I have to do the best I can and stay out of my own way.

"There are guys that are great players trying to catch me but I have to just let things happen and be patient with myself."

Grace was joined on 12 under by 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose while Martin Kaymer, who won here in 2010, was a further shot back.
