Colin Montgomerie is hoping his consistency so far in 2014 will be converted into Major success this week at the US Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid.
The Scot has six top ten finishes in seven appearances on the US Champions Tour and has been tipped by playing partner Tom Watson as a contender this week, with his high fades into the greens suiting the Harbor Shores course in Michigan.
“I had a run of six top tens there, which was good in a row, and I just bogeyed the last there, last week to avoid another top‑10,” said the 2010 European Ryder Cup Captain. “So we're in contention, I haven't won yet and I would love to win, an event somewhere.
“My iron play has always been my strength, always,” he added. “The fairways are quite generous here. So you are going to hit the fairways. From there, you take your opportunity.
“I look forward to trying to attack certain pins and others you have to be very careful with. You have be very careful here and use the head an awful lot of the time.”
The eight-time European Number One has been drawn to play alongside Bernhard Langer and Watson in the opening two rounds, and he is relishing the opportunity to join two legends of the game in the season’s opening Senior Major Championship.
“I'm looking forward to playing with my old Ryder Cup partner Bernhard and, of course, the Ryder Cup captain tomorrow in Tom Watson,” he said. “That's always an honor to play with such a legend.
“Bernhard Langer has been dominating the Champions Tour this last few years, really, to be honest. He's playing as good golf as ever. So I look forward to the challenge of trying to post a score that's up there tomorrow.”
Montgomerie, who will also be in field for The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Royal Porthcawl in July, is making his debut in the event after turning 50 last June, and he admits he is excited about the chance to compete in Major championships once again.
“They have a Major feel about them,” he said. “I enjoyed playing the US Senior Open and The Senior Open last year. I wasn't old enough to play here last year in this tournament.
“They certainly have a feel to them, a Major feel to them. I'm as excited about playing in these events as I was when I was competing in the American Majors, or also The Open Championship, on the junior tour.”
