Colin Montgomerie’s victory, his third on the European Tour this year, and the £166,000 cheque for first place was enough to lift him into number one in the Volvo Rankings for the first time this season. Monty to now set to retain his number one spot and win a record sixth rankings title in a row.
Robert Karlsson and Vijay Singh chased Monty hard all day. Karlsson took the lead temporarily after chipping in for eagle on the thirteenth hole, but a bogey on the fourteenth put an end to his chance. Two birdies in the last three holes made some amends for Singh’s poor finish to his third round but was not quite enough to catch Monty.
Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke, the other two protagonists in the chase for the Volvo Ranking title, have now got it all to do. With only two ranking events left, Monty has now got a lead of over £100,000.
