Montgomerie relishing title defence at Woburn

Colin Montgomerie, the new US Senior PGA Champion, has confirmed he will defend his title when the 14th edition of the Travis Perkins Masters takes place on the Duke’s Course at Woburn Golf Club from August 29-31.

Montgomerie, an eight-time winner of the Money List in an illustrious career on The European Tour, captured his maiden Senior Tour title in some style in Woburn last year, winning by six shots from Spaniard Miguel Angel Martin and England’s Paul Wesselingh.

The Scot never looked back after opening with a round of 68, adding further rounds of 68 and 70 for a ten under par aggregate winning score. It was Montgomerie’s first victory for six years and 55 days, and came in only his third appearance on the Senior Tour.

Montgomerie subsequently finished in a tie for fourth place in the Russian Open Golf Championship and took sixth in the season-ending MCB Tour Championship. He has continued that fine form on the over-50s circuit with an impressive run of top ten finishes on the US Champions Tour this year followed by a superb maiden Senior Major triumph at Harbor Shores last week, when he held off Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer to win the US Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid.

The 31-time European Tour champion will now bid to become only the second man in history, after England’s Carl Mason, to mount a successful title defence of the Travis Perkins Masters.

He said: “It was fantastic to get my first victory so soon in my Senior Tour career. Getting your debut win on any tour is a very special moment, so I’m very much looking forward to going back to Woburn to defend my title.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time on the tour so far – seeing some familiar faces I haven’t seen for quite a while has been a real treat. There’s a great camaraderie, but we all still want to win – and hopefully I can come out on top again at Woburn in August.”

Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour, said: “Colin’s debut win in last year’s Travis Perkins Masters was definitely one of the highlights of the season, so it’s great for everyone involved with the tournament that he’ll be returning to Woburn to defend his title.

“He’s been a fantastic ambassador for golf down the years, so I’m sure the crowds will again come out to support him and the rest of the Senior Tour stars at Woburn at the end of August.”

John Carter, Chief Executive, Travis Perkins plc, said: “Since we started sponsoring the event in 2008, we have been delighted with the success of the Travis Perkins Masters and the 2013 edition, won by Colin Montgomerie, was another magnificent tournament.

“We are very proud that Colin won his maiden Senior Tour event at Woburn, and are delighted he is returning to defend his title.”

His Grace The Duke of Bedford, owner of Woburn Golf Club, said: “We would like to congratulate Colin on his fantastic victory in the US Senior PGA Championship.  We look forward to welcoming him back to Woburn to defend his title, along with all of the other Senior Tour players, as well as the thousands of spectators who support the tournament each year.”
