Montgomerie holds narrow lead

Colin Montgomerie is at the top of the leaderboard at The Oxfordshire on eleven under par at the end of the 3rd round of the Benson and Hedges International Open, but he is being closely shadowed by a field of the highest quality.

Twenty six players are within just 5 shots of Montgomerie, and most notably The Masters Champion, José Maria Olazábal, is in second place just one shot behind.

On a cool grey day, some of the best scoring came not from the leaders but earlier in the day, with Andrew Sherborne and Diego Borrego shooting 66's, and Peter Mitchell 67, to move themselves up the leaderboard into tied 3rd.

Also in tied 3rd is Per Ulrik Johansson, who brightened the otherwise dull overcast conditions in sky-blue back-to-front cap and sweater.

The Masters Champion, José Maria Olazábal, found it a difficult day. "It was a completely different wind today, completely opposite to the past two rounds", said Olazábal. "The golf course was playing tougher than the first two rounds, especially the early holes. What really got my round going was the birdie at 6, and then the eagle at 7, they changed the whole picture for me. But anyone within 3 or 4 shots of the lead can still win this tournament."

Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo both continued to rediscover some of their world class form, and lie just 5 shots off the lead.
