Montgomerie and Olazábal head Europe's Masters Challenge

Colin Montgomerie made his best ever start to the Masters Tournament to lie a shot off the lead after the rain-shortened first day at Augusta National. His opening two-under-par 70 matched that of 1994 Champion José Maria Olazábal.

Motngomerie, out in 37, picked up birdies at the tenth, 13th and 16th before saving par on the last.

A shot further back is 1988 Champion Sandy Lyle along with Ernie Els and Ian Woosnam, winner in 1991.

Brandel Chamblee, Davis Love III and Scott McCarron lead in the clubhouse at three under par with Nick Price, also on three under, left with one hole to play.

Play was suspended for 90 minutes at 5pm local time as a thunderstorm passed through. When darkness fell, 12 players were left out on the course.
