The Italian Ryder Cup star birdied three of the first four, turned in a brilliant 32 and with another birdie on the 442 yard tenth was up into a tie for 14th on one under with Lee Westwood, yet to resume.

England’s Brian Davis was also making progress – he birdied the first and fifth to improve to level par and joint 18th spot.

Overnight leaders Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner were on five under and due to tee off at 2000 BST.

Molinari went to five under for the day and two under for the championship with a four on the long 12th. He was up to joint 11th and only three off the lead.

England's World Number One Luke Donald bogeyed the second, but then birdied the next three to be joint 15th with Westwood.
