Mickelson leads in Florida

Phil Mickelson overcame an overnight health scare to take control of the World Golf Championships - CA Championship.

World Golf Championships-CA Championship - Final Round

It emerged earlier in the day that the left-hander had been treated overnight for heat exhaustion.

Mickelson, chasing a second title of the year following his Northern Trust Open win at Riviera Country Club last month, had finished the third round at Doral as a four shot joint leader with fellow American Nick Watney but later began to feel ill, his spokesman said.

“Phil Mickelson was treated last night in a Doral urgent care centre for what the attending physician called ‘heat exhaustion and mild dehydration’,” TR Reinman said in a statement.

Reinman added that Mickelson had been lethargic following his third round yesterday and his condition had deteriorated rapidly.

“At 9pm he was admitted to Baptist Medical Plaza at Doral where he received two bags of IV solution.”

But the World Number Three showed no ill effects as he and Watney both birdied the par five first hole.

Mickelson moved into the outright lead at 18 under with a birdie at the second as Watney missed his birdie putt.

Watney soon drew level with a birdie three at the third and when Mickelson bogeyed the fourth the Buick Invitational winner found himself in the outright lead.

Jeev Milka Singh and Camilo Villegas led the bid to stay in touch with birdies at the first to both move to 13 under but having also reached that mark, Kenny Perry fell back to 12 under with a birdie at the fifth.

Both came unstuck at the fourth with bogeys to drop back to 12 under.

Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark also birdied the opening hole and was at 12 under after four while both Wilson and Thomas Aiken of South Africa had moved to 11 under. Aiken after 14 holes, Wilson having played ten.
