McIlroy, who will represent Team Europe at next week's Ryder Cup showdown, saw off the challenge of America's Ryan Moore at the fourth extra hole to secure a bumper payday.

The 27 year old began the day two shots off the overnight lead held by Dustin Johnson and Kevin Chappell but carded an eagle, five birdies and a solitary bogey in his fourth round to finish on 12 under alongside Moore and Chappell.

Both McIlroy and Moore fired birdies at the first extra hole, while Chappell was eliminated after making par.

There was nothing to separate the pair at the second and third play-off holes but the Northern Irishman holed his 14 foot birdie putt at the next to clinch the title.

After being presented with the trophy, McIlroy told Sky Sports: "It was incredible.

"As I said at the start of the day, all I wanted to do was concentrate on winning this - the Tour Championship. I couldn't control what anyone else did.

"I just wanted to go out here and play the way I've been playing. I've played really well this week and feel my game is coming together at the right time.

"Two wins in the last three feels pretty nice."
