McIlroy wants the one that got away

Rory McIlroy has had many incredible ups and downs in his stellar career so far but if he could take one tournament back - it would be the Omega European Masters of 11 years ago.

The Northern Irishman was playing his rookie European Tour season and while he had put in some excellent performances, the then 19-year-old had yet to claim that maiden win.

After three days at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club he held a four shot lead and while that had been narrowed on Sunday, he stood over a five foot par putt on the last that would have seen him lift the trophy.

The putt slid by and Frenchman Jeff Lucquin went on to win the play-off and lift his only European Tour title.

"It would have been nice to go home with the trophy but I have plenty more tournaments even this year," McIlroy said on that afternoon of September 7, 2008. "It would be great to get a win this year but if not I have the rest of my career. C'est la vie."

He would have to wait less than five months for that first victory at the Dubai Desert Classic and he has since claimed a further 12 - including four Major Championships - won three Race to Dubai titles and spent 95 weeks at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

But after all that, if he could take one thing back, it would be that autumn afternoon 11 years ago.

"I had a wonderful opportunity to win my first event on Tour here," he said ahead the 2019 edition. "I was leading going into the last day, had a one shot lead playing the last and wasn't able to make par from there. Was beaten in the play-off.

"It's still to this day the one event that I think of that I would like to re-do - get a mulligan."

McIlroy has finished seventh and third in his two other appearances in Crans-Montana but it is scheduling, not bad memories, that have kept him away and he is delighted to be back in a breathtaking setting.

"The first time I was here I fell in love with the place, the people, the atmosphere," he said. "I'm glad that it worked out this year that I could be here. I would like to give myself another chance at least.

"My wife and her parents are here this week so it's nice to show them around. They had never been here before. They went to Zermatt today, went up to the glacier yesterday.

"I still have a golf tournament to play so I can't do it all with them but it's been fun. Being able to walk from the hotel to the first tee is nice. Just the atmosphere of the village is nice."

McIlroy's victory on the US PGA Tour on Sunday saw him lift the season-long FedEx Cup and also climb up to World Number Two behind Brooks Koepka.

The American still maintains a healthy Rankings lead but McIlroy is determined to one day soon get back on top of the world.

"It's a goal to get closer, to keep playing well," he said. "I think I saw somewhere that there is more World Ranking points on offer here than there has been for eight years, Wentworth is obviously big for World Ranking points, there's a WGC coming up. There's still a lot to play for. That's my focus for the rest of the year, getting closer to that number one spot."
