McIlroy on the move at Whistling Straits

Rory McIlroy got his third round off to a flying start as he attempted to chase down the leaders at the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Australian Matt Jones completed a second round 65 in the morning following Friday's storms to move to 11 under and open up a two shot lead over countryman Jason Day.

Justin Rose parred his remaining hole to sit a further shot back but with the final pair not due out until 1506 local time, it was left to defending champion McIlroy to put the pressure on those at the top of the leaderboard.

The World Number One began his round nine shots off the lead and saw his birdie putt on the first somehow hang on the edge of the hole without dropping.

But he put his third on the par five second inside six feet and despite missing a birdie chance on the third, he picked up another shot on the fourth.

The 26 year-old's second shot on the par five fifth found the back of the green and when he drained a 60 foot putt for eagle, he was four under for the day and inside the top ten.

The Northern Irishman then found a greenside bunker on the sixth and dropped back into the group at five under which included Martin Kaymer and Branden Grace who had both birdied the first.

Boo Weekley was also on the move as he reached seven under for the day and six under for the tournament through 16 holes while Phil Mickelson was five under having played the 15th in a round that so far contained eight birdies.

France's Victor Dubuisson also impressed with a 67 as he, along with many others, made the best of the rain-softened layout.

The Frenchman finished in a tie for seventh at Valhalla last year but has missed the three cuts at Major Championships this season and needed a second round 70 to finish right on the line at two over here.

The Ryder Cup star was in the third group out and, after a par at the first, put his second on the par five second inside 15 feet and made an eagle.

His tee shot at the par three third was to within four feet to set up a birdie and he had another look at eagle on the fifth after taking an aggressive line over the water but had to make do with picking up a single shot.

A further birdie followed on the 11th and Dubuisson nearly found the hole with his second shot at the 15th before recording his only bogey of the day on the 17th.

Tyrrell Hatton, playing at the year's final Major for the first time, recorded a 68 to also sit at three under as five birdies in his first 14 holes were only blemished by a bogey on the 17th.

Charl Schwartzel, Luke Donald and Brooks Koepka were all two under for the day on the front nine to move to within seven shots of the leader.
