Rory McIlroy extended his lead on day two of the WGC-Mexico Championship as Sergio Garcia made a move up the leaderboard at Chapultepec Golf Club.
The Northern Irishman equalled his lowest opening round on the European Tour on day one and a birdie-birdie start in his first three holes in round two moved him to ten under par.
Dustin Johnson was then at seven under having played one hole, a shot clear of Garcia who turned in 31.
American Matt Kuchar was also at six under having birdied his first hole, one ahead of George Coetzee, Tyrrell Hatton and Justin Thomas.
Garcia has a Green Jacket and is a Ryder Cup great but he has yet to add a World Golf Championships title to his glittering CV.
He moved to five under on day one before a stuttering finish but flew out of the blocks on Friday to surge up the leaderboard.
The 39-year-old drove the green on the par four first and got down in two, holed a 13-footer on the second and put his tee-shot on the par three third to five feet for a birdie-birdie-birdie start.
The Spaniard then took advantage of the par five sixth to get within two of the lead but McIlroy started with a birdie of his own.
The four time Major Championship winner eagled the par four first after driving the green on day one and he was through the putting surface in round two but got up and down from a bunker.
A booming drive on the second allowed him to make the green again and two putts meant he was the first man this week into double figures.
Hatton three-putted the tenth for an opening bogey but bounced back by making the most of the par five 11th and putting an approach to six feet on the 12th.
Playing partner Coetzee also took advantage of the 11th to get to five under.
David Lipsky and Richard Sterne - both in the top ten on the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex - were then six shots off the lead.
