McIlroy eyeing improvements at The Concession

Rory McIlroy gave an ominous signal to the rest of the field as he revealed he felt "nowhere near" his best despite shooting a 66 that put him right in the mix with 18 holes to play at the WGC - Workday Championship at The Concession 2021.

The four time Major Championship winner did not look like troubling the leaders when he sat just one under for his round after 11 holes, with Collin Morikawa setting a blistering pace ahead of him.

But the Northern Irishman eagled the 13th to go with three other birdies on the way home to catapult himself to 11 under and within four of the lead.

That still leaves him with a lot of work to do and McIlroy will be concentrating only on his own game as he looks to complete the set of WGC titles.

"I've just been sort of shooting myself in the foot a little bit with some of the mistakes I've been making," he said.

"It's okay, it's nowhere near what I feel like I can play. I feel like I'm sort of piecing it around. I'm getting it around, put it that way.

"I don't feel like I'm flushing it by any means but it's a work in progress and I'm seeing some good signs, which I guess is encouraging.

"I can't really think about winning or trying to, I just have to go out and shoot another good score.

"Got to keep the big numbers off my card. I've made a couple of doubles over the last couple of days, so if I can keep those to a minimum and make as many birdies as I've been making, then I'll hopefully shoot another good one and see where that leaves me.

"I think if you're within three or four, you still feel like you've got a reasonable chance."
